Skateboarding and Surfing in South Africa

Need more facilities

Posted by rivalblogger on 7th December 2009

I was walking around the Brightwater Commons (the old Randburg Waterfront) on Friday afternoon and it struck me what a great investment / concept it was to develop that bowl for BMX riders and skateboarders to use.

The kids use it for hours on end and even if they come out battered and bruised and exhausted, they are ready to come back for more the next day.

It dispels this whole idea that by encouraging a skateboard culture you attract an “unwanted” element.

From a general health perspective, the kids that are participating here are doing something that is active, encourages healthy social interaction and are not off doing less savoury things.

Other shopping centres should take note of what the Brightwater Commons has achieved and look at interesting similar concept parks in and around their shopping malls.

Introduction

South Africa has a promising (albeit small) skateboarding and surfing culture. However those who participate are fanatical about the opportunities in the country.

Sports like BMX have received a great boost locally after the excitement generated at the last Olympics.

The Sk8r Kulcha blog is aimed at promoting various aspects around skateboarding, surfing, roller-blading / in-line skating and BMX to help these industries and sports to help raise their profile.

If you have news and information about events or developments inĀ  these sectors, please drop us a mail on newsdesk@rival.co.za and we
will see what we can do to assist you in promoting them!
