Sifiso Nhlapo is going to the Olympics!

Sifiso who?!

Sifiso Nhlapo, South Africa’s reigning BMX champion, booked his spot to the Beijing Olympic Games when he finished third in the Elite Men’s race at the 2008 BMX World Championships in Taiyuan, China on Saturday.

The 20-year-old from Johannesburg, claimed South Africa’s first ever Elite category BMX world championships medal in a hugely entertaining final.

BMX as a sport hardly receives any exposure in South Africa and to have a world beater like Nhlapo quietly going about his job and beating some of the best in the world is something to be proud of. Well done also to MTN for providing sponsorship for the young rider. Nhlapo needed to at least reach the quarterfinals to secure his slot for Beijing. This year will be the first year that BMX will be represented at the olympics.

Nhlapo is currently ranked 12th in the world - an awesome achievement.

Skizo commented after the race, “this is what I have been training for over the last 5 years and it is just a milestone towards the Olympics. I would just like to thank all the people around me that have supported me and made this possible, the list is endless but you all know who you are.”

Well done sir - I believe you have put BMX on the map in South Africa. We will all be holding thumbs for you.
