Roni Deutch Reviews the Best Places in the World for Surfing

With thousands of great surf spots all over the world, and more being found every year, it is hard to know which ones are worth visiting. To help other surf lovers, Roni Deutch has gathered the following list of the 8 best beaches in the world for surfing.

Gold Coast City, Australia
Australia is known across the world for their excellent surfing conditions. With four main breaks and sunny skies, Gold Coast City has been named the “surfers paradise”. It features nearby shopping, entertainment, and tourist attractions that are convenient for surfers looking to have some more fun after hitting the waves.

Kandahar, Mexico

Surfers of every level can enjoy the waves of Kandahar. A wide variety of surf breaks allow surfers to advance their skills and have a fun relaxing surf all in one day. The beach is not overly crowded, but is known by surfers for it’s great weather year-round. But if you are looking for 15 feet waves then I suggest visiting Kandahar in either May or June.

Jeffery’s Bay, South Africa
Jeffery’s Bay is so popular among surfers that it hosts the annual Billabong Pro World Champion Tour on its beach Supertubes. Jefferey’s Bay is world famous for great surfing and great fun. The surrounding mountains and wildlife will leave you breathless, while the waves will shock you with their sustainability and variety.

Half Moon Bay, California
With infamous waves ranging between 25 and 50 feet, Half Moon Bay is a mecca for surfers and ocean lovers alike. Rock formations cause the wave phenomenon from underneath the water, making the spot all the more amazing to visit. Although the waves are not the biggest in the world, they are certainly the biggest in California!

Banzai Pipeline, O’ahu
The Pipeline has both some of the best and most dangerous waves in the world. It is definitely no place for a beginner as their waves are so intense that even some pros shy away from. Although it is one of the most coveted and loved surf spots, the danger should not be ignored. More surfers have died surfing at the Pipeline than any other surf spot.

Tavarua, Fiji
Fun because of its “secret” element, Tavarua has 2 world-class breaks, beautiful scenery, and a breathtaking coral reef. Unfortunately, a private surf camp manages this island and only allows visitors by invitation. Fortunately, the island hosts multiple surf competitions each year that can be watched on television or online.

Teahupoo, Tahiti
Another site of the annual Billabong World Championship Tour, Teahupoo lets experienced surfers live out their dreams. Their beaches have waves reaching past 10 feet, a heavy current, and perfect barrels. Because of their perfect conditions nearly every professional surfer has been to Teahupoo at least once, and almost every amateur dreams to.

Mundaka, Spain
One of the most famous surf spots in Europe and the world, Mundaka offers the waves and speed that every surfer craves. The current is strong, making your ride more smooth and fun but also adding some danger. Only experienced surfers should head to Mundaka, as the tide is so strong it can only be surfed in shallow waters.

Tony Hawk’s Project 8

The original Tony Hawk PS2 game was a huge success when it arrived on the scenes and the brand just seems to have continued to grow.

Tony Hawk’s Project 8 is now out and from the feedback I have heard about it, the game is pretty hot!

The write up from online reseller Loot (Where the game retails for R175) says:

Tony Hawk’s Project 8 challenges players to experience the intensity and pressure of skating against some of the world’s top pros in true to life competitions as they aim to become the #1 skater.

With an entirely new gameplay engine, the trick-based gameplay features amazing, detailed character animations that react realistically on and off their boards, a new physics system, an innovative bail mode and the ability to move ramps and rails throughout the city.

Tell us what you know about this game and whether it is as good as people are making it out to be!

Quiksilver King of the park - Thrashers in Pretoria

The sun was out and Thrashers Skate Park was packed to capacity. With rumours murmuring of this being the last event at the popular Menlyn skate park the scene was set for a great day of skateboarding.

Contest organizers had decided on a slightly different format where three obstacles were selected in the park at which competitors would be judged on their overall performance on all three obstacles. 45 minute best trick hammer sessions on each obstacle would be judged by the Motley Crue judging panel of Brendan Body, Andrew Morck, Patrick Duff and Clint van der Schyf.

The first hammer session was held on the Grind Box and saw Simon Stipcich nailing a nollie flip backside tailslide bigspin out and Deon Fourie laying down a half cab noseslide into backside tailslide to fakie. On to the Funbox we moved with Puddy Zwennis doing a bigspin flip over the box, Yann Horrowitz laying a Frontside 180 fakie nosegrind down the rail and Deon doing a Footplant off the flatbar to boardslide down the rail.

It all came down to the final obstacle where a lot of bodies were hurt and many spectators nearly decapitated – the Double-Set Gap. Alan Marola put down a Backside Nollie Flip, Kyfie Kruger did a Fakie Kickflip, Yann with a Frontside heelflip / Frontside Varial heel, and Deon sealed it with a Half Cab Heelflip.

After much discussion and contemplation by the judges it was finally decided that Deon Fourie was to be crowned the new Quiksilver King of the Park which he enthusiastically dedicated to his local crew “Plankie Plankie”. Second place was awarded to another local Kyfie Kruger, he received R3 000 and a strong handshake. Durbanite Simon Stipcich left the park with R2 000 for his third place finish.

The Quiksilver King of the Park will be featured on an up coming episode of Boardriders TV on Supersport 1. Quiksilver King of the Park is presented by Virgin Mobile in association with Resolution.

The Growth of Timberland

By: Roberto Bell

The history of Timberland dates back to the early 1920’s. It was at this time that Timberland’s founder Nathan Swartz began his career in shoemaking. This eager Bostonian set his roots as an apprentice stitcher.

Swartz worked very hard at his craft and trade, making him one of the top shoe smith’s around. Swartz always wanted to own his own shoe company so he saved up his money and in 1952 his dream came through as he purchased a half interest in the Abington Shoe Company.

At the time of purchase Abington was primarily a shoe company that was a contractor to the other major manufacturers. In 1955, Swartz decided to purchase the remaining half of the Abington Shoe Company making him the sole owner. He quickly brought his sons on board and made it a family affair.

Once the ball was rolling the company began experimenting with its own brand of shoes. In 1960, they introduced their crowning achievement in the form of a fully waterproof boot. This innovative creation quickly put them on the map and made them pretty popular.

In 1973, the company decided to change its name to the Timberland Company. They named it after their ever popular waterproof boot brand. Then, in the late 70’s, after Nathan Swartz stepped down as CEO, Sydney Swartz became CEO. The company then began offering clothing and women’s products to its line.

By the 1990’s the Timberland brand expanded to include, backpacks, watches and even kids shoes. Thanks in part to heavy endorsements from many popular rap stars the company continued to grow in popularity, now sporting a decidedly different demographic. No longer was it rugged outerwear only, but it was also a style brand as well…to this day Timberland continues to be one of the top sellers in urban shoes and clothing, thanks due to the celebrity endorsements.

Pop Culture

Throughout the 1990’s, many of rap’s outspoken stars began wearing Timberlands for style. Some even decided to rap about it in their songs. This led to a boom in popularity for the Boston based company, introducing a demographic that they previously had not been marketing too, the city dwellers.
No longer was their brand exclusively for hiking or outer wear, but now it was being used as a fashion statement. Celebrities were wearing Timberland’s to some of society’s most A List accompanied functions, quickly moving the company up the trend ladder.
Today, Timberland is more popular than ever, as the trend of being a stylish brand has continued.

Timberland Range
Timberland has branched into many different aspects of clothing. Their brands currently produce pants, shoes, boots, backpacks, watches, shirts and women’s clothing.

Recently, Timberland has also branched into the skateboard footwear market, with its purchase of the popular Ipath brand. The company’s vision has expanded exponentially beyond what Nathan Swartz had envisioned it to be. Branching into markets that previously would have been an afterthought, Timberland’s aggressive expansion has put them on the map of popularity for many years to come.

Advanced Surfing: Hitting the Lip

Hitting the lip involves accelerating on a wave enough to surf up the face of the wave to the lip (the crest) and then coming back down to continue down the line. This maneuver will be one of your first tricks on a short board, and it’s one of the more enjoyable moves because it involves going up the wave quickly before gently falling back down.

If you watch surfing videos, which you should because they will teach you a great deal about short-boarding technique, notice how the surfer determines the move he or she will make by the shape and condition of the wave itself. The speed of the wave, in particular, will determine how to reposition your board. If the wave is slow, apply more weight on your front foot and step down to accelerate. If the wave speeds up, then take the opportunity to slide your front foot back an inch. Your knees should be bent throughout this process, which improves your center of gravity and balance.

When you decide to make your move and hit the lip, apply pressure on your back foot, which will allow your board to head up the wave. As you near the crest, release your foot so that you level out at the crest of the wave, with your board floating on the crest. Prepare to drop back down by bending your knees and pointing the tip of your board so that you can continue down the line. When you hit the bottom of the wave, do a quick bottom turn to gain acceleration to finish your ride.

Throughout your ride, your body and eyes should always be looking in the direction you want to go. Your back leg and upper body do most of the maneuvering. Hitting the lip involves steering with your back foot and forcing the movement with your shoulders. This trick takes a bit of practice, so don’t expect to land it the first try.

Long boarders can also perform this maneuver but should be careful not to be as aggressive with the movements, especially if the drop from the lip is more than four feet. The maneuver should be smoother and more fluid.

Well done to SA BMX community

I think all of us felt heartbroken to see or hear that Sifiso slid out of the Olympics in spectacular fashion.

It was just one more thing that went wrong at this Olympics.

But maybe we need to step back and consider something. Nhlapo’s actions will have been a huge boost for the South African BMX community as a whole. People’s interests have been piqued and South Africans who had no idea who he was now know that he is a super star in the making.

His actions are also likely to see increased investment into the sport and sponsors waking up and saying “hhhmmmm there might be some value in spending some money here”.

The sport and its competitors will get a much needed boost and its means that they can take something positive out of this Olympics.

I’m a sports administrator in my own time and I know for a fact that success can only be partially attributed to the competitor themselves. We often forget how much hard work goes into ensuring that they succeed with off field actions.

Well done to all of the SA BMX community - I hope you benefit enormously from these achievements at the Olympics…
